RANGERS began their defence of the League Cup with an extra-time victory over Partick Thistle last night, winning 2-1 against the Jags.

Kris Boyd's magnificent volley opened the scoring but Ian McCall's men soon responded through Steven McKeown in a thrilling match.

Pedro Mendes eventually won it five minutes from the end of the additional 30 as he curled home with the outside of his right boot.
