50 Years In Europe
By Emma Dodds
A galaxy of Light Blue stars past and present were on show recently at the Hilton Hotel to celebrate the club's 50 Years In Europe dinner.
The gala event was a huge success with over 700 guests in attendance as John Greig, Jim Baxter, Ally McCoist and Mark Hateley scooped the awards.
Paul Le Guen and the full first team squad were in attendance and the evening certainly gave him and the other newcomers an insight into the institution that is Rangers Football Club.
It was a night of nostalgia and celebration
as the club marked the progress made on the European stage over the last five decades.
Starting against OGC Nice on October 24, 1956 right through to last season's thrilling last 16 clash with Villarreal, every major incident over the last 50 years was covered at the dinner.
The highlight of the night, however, was definitely the awards ceremony when four Rangers greats were honoured for their contribution at this level.
The prizes were divided into four categories; Best Defensive Performer - won by John Greig, Best Midfield Performer - Jim Baxter, collected by his sons Alan and Stephen, Best Attacking Performer - scooped by Ally McCoist and Best European goal - awarded to Mark Hateley for his strike against Leeds at Elland Road.
Greig said: "It's a great honour for me, but I find it slightly embarrassing because having played with the club for such a long time, I have come across a lot of great players.
"To be singled out is a huge honour but I can't help thinking about all the other people who have played for this club with such distinction."
McCoist added: "It's fantastic and I am thrilled to win this award. I was up against some great players and it's a privilege.
"Rangers have had some unbelievable players over the years and it's wonderful to get this. I'm chuffed to bits."
McCoist's diving header against Leeds at Elland Road was also in the running for Best European Goal, but it was his strike partner Mark Hateley's volley that got the most votes.
The Englishman said: "That was a great night for us and my only thought when the ball came
to me was to get it in the net.
"It was a great goal but I honestly thought Colin Stein's strike in Barcelona would have won this but it didn't and of course I'm thrilled that mine was voted the winner.
"There have been some great goals in Europe for Rangers and I am overjoyed this is the winner."
