Simply The Best
RANGERS' nine-in-a-row legends joined fans and sponsors at a gala dinner at the Hilton Hotel on July 9 to mark the tenth anniversary of their historic run of league title successes during the 90s.
The event was attended by all of the management team, coaching staff and players from this glorious era and a select few were presented with special awards for the part they played in bringing so much silverware back to the famous Ibrox Trophy Room.
Gers' supporters from around the world were able to vote for the players they felt made a telling contribution via the club's official website and the winners were hardly surprising!
The award for Best nine-in-a-row player went to Brian Laudrup and few could argue that the Great Dane deserved this accolade.
For four years the wing king terrorised Scottish defences with his dazzling skill and pace and his ability to hit the net as well as create goals for others took Walter Smith's team to a different level.
The Greatest Contribution to the Team award went to the one and only Ally McCoist.
The club's legendary striker enjoyed a truly remarkable career but it was during the nine-in-a-row run that he was to enjoy his most prolific spell alongside Mark Hateley, winning two prestigious European Golden Boots in the process.
The Players' Player award was given to nine-in-a-row captain Richard Gough.
Goughie was an exceptional leader both on and off-the field and his ability as a defender put him in the world-class category. Few players, if any, were more inspirational in helping drive the side to nine league championships than the skipper.
Best Old Firm Performance went to Andy Goram for his sensational display at Parkhead in the hugely important 1-0 win over Celtic on November 14, 1996.
Brian Laudrup opened the scoring in this nerve wracking encounter but The Goalie was to deny Pierre Van Hooijdonk with a dramatic penalty save which gave Rangers the upper hand in the quest for that all-important ninth successive title.
Fans were also given the chance to vote for their favourite goals from the nine-in-a-row era and the following came out on top:
Paul Gascoigne - Rangers v Aberdeen (3-1) (2nd Goal)- 28 April 1996
Jorg Albertz - Rangers v Celtic (3-1) - 2 January 1997
Ray Wilkins - Rangers v Celtic (5-1) - 27 August 1988
