Nine in a Row Stars Raise 50K For Charity
RANGERS midfielder Charlie Adam and Ibrox legend John Brown today presented four charities with cheques worth £50,000 from the proceeds of the 9-in-a-Row 10th Anniversary game which was played at the Stadium in July.
Over 30,000 supporters turned out at Ibrox on Sunday 8 July to cheer on their 9-in-a- Row heroes - Brian Laudrup and Pieter Huistra scored in a 2-2 draw against a Scottish League Select side from the era - and four worthwhile charities are set to benefit from the match.
Radio Clyde's Cash For Kids Appeal, The Davie Cooper Centre and The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association each received £10,000 while The Rangers Charity Foundation was presented with a cheque for £20,000.
Rangers Chief Executive, Martin Bain, commented: "The 9-in-a-Row anniversary celebration was a great occasion for everyone associated with Rangers Football Club and I am pleased these charitable organisations will benefit as a result.
"Radio Clyde's Cash For Kids Appeal, The Davie Cooper Centre, The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association and our own Charity Foundation work tirelessly to improve the lives of thousands of people and the Club is proud to be associated with them."
John Brown, who helped organise the players who competed in the 9-in-a-Row match, commented: "It was great to meet up with my old team-mates and we all enjoyed pulling on the boots at Ibrox once again.
"During my time at Rangers we used to donate money from our end of season dances so the fact these four charities will benefit to the tune of £50,000 from the anniversary match is athe icing on the cake for me."
Light Blue legend Arthur Numan, who accepted the Charity Foundation cheque in his role as Charity Patron, commented: "This is a fantastic gesture by the Club and I know the money can make a positive difference to the lives of hundreds of people through the work of the Rangers Charity Foundation."
Former Ibrox striker Derek Johnstone collected Radio Clyde's Cash For Kids donation, he commented: "Cash For Kids 2007 was launched last week and this is a wonderful start to the campaign. £10,000 is a terrific sum of money to receive and on behalf of everyone at the organisation, I thank Rangers Football Club for their generosity."
John Davidson, Director of The Davie Cooper Centre, stated: "I am delighted to accept this donation and I thank Rangers Football Club for their kindness. The timing could not be better for us as we have just received planning permission for a new facility designed for children with special needs located on Glasgow's Great Western Road and this cheque will help fund the project."
Iain McWhirter, Fundraising Manager for The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association, stated: "We would like to thank Rangers Football Club for this generous donation and for their continued support.
"We are the only charity in Scotland providing care and support to people living with Motor Neurone Disease and this money will enable our team of clinical specialists to continue delivering direct care where it is most needed."
