We Are The Commons People
By David Melvin
A group of Rangers supporting MPs have joined together to form the Westminster Parliamentary Rangers Supporters Club.
The club, chaired by former Armed Forces minister Adam Ingram, will be open to anyone who works within the Palace of Westminster and already has members from across the political divide.
Aiding Labour MP Ingram in the running of the club will be three vice chairmen from various parties within the Houses of Commons and Lords.
Baron Wallace the former leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and now a member of the House of Lords will sit alongside Conservative MP Eleanor Laing and DUP member Gregory Campbell.
Brian Donahoe, the Labour MP for Ayrshire Central will act as Secretary for the newest addition to the group of Rangers Supporters Clubs.
With an initial membership coming close to 20, Chairman Adam Ingram is expecting that number to grow.
He said: "We had thirteen people at the inaugural meeting, and around 20 expressions of interest and that's only within a matter of weeks.
"We expect there to be more interest in the coming weeks. The balance is not just members of Parliament or members of the House of Lords.
"There are Officers of the House, Police Officers and others who work for MPs. Anyone who works within the Palace of Westminster would be eligible to join."
Ingram hopes that club members will find the time to travel to games, but admits that with few gaps in a busy schedule that could be tricky.
He added: "I'm sure members of the club would be interested, but of course with midweek games it can be a problem with parliamentary duties.
"But this is a group of people who are all Rangers supporters and want to identify themselves with the club, and that can take many forms."
Ingram has been a regular in the Ibrox stands in the past and although he is often too busy to attend, he has followed the team's progress this season.
He said: "I was a regular at Ibrox for about three seasons, but when I became a Minister ten years ago my Saturdays were at a premium.
"I was working Sunday to Monday and I simply didn't have time to get to games, but no matter where I have travelled in the world I have tried to listen to or watch games when they are on.
"I've been to games off and on over the years when my time permits and I still have a great attachment to the club.
"I haven't had much chance to see the team this season but I did make it to one of the earlier games in the season and I'll be there to watch them on Thursday night against Werder Bremen.
"But I've kept track of things by listening out for results on the radio and the odd game when I can. There's a big part of me doing the politics but a bit of my heart and head still follows Rangers."
