Whit A Week
By Andrew Dickson
STEVEN WHITTAKER is looking to celebrate his Scotland call-up with a second successive win with Rangers over Dundee United.
The versatile full-back was selected for the upcoming friendly with the Czech Republic by national manager George Burley when he named his squad earlier this week.
It will be the second time he will have joined the Scots set-up, having also been summoned for the Euro 2008 qualifier with Ukraine in October 2006.
Whittaker, who has B caps to his name, didn't play on that occasion but is likely to appear in Prague on May 30 and is looking forward to the opportunity.
He said: "I'm over the moon about it. I was in a squad previously when Walter was the manager but I never got stripped then.
"Obviously I'll be looking to do that this time around and hopefully I can be involved in the game at some point.
"I'm happy with the way things are going for me at the moment. The team is playing well and we're getting great results here at Rangers.
"Being in the position we're in at the moment is fantastic and hopefully we can keep things going against United and finish off the job over the next couple of weeks."
Whittaker is hoping to appear against United at Ibrox tomorrow lunchtime and turn in a performance that gets him a starting slot in Wednesday's UEFA Cup final.
This weekend's fixture is Gers' last before they face Zenit St Petersburg at the City of Manchester Stadium and the 23-year-old knows a good showing could prove beneficial.
Whittaker added: "Your form needs to be good if you're going to get to play in a big match like the one we have coming up on Wednesday.
"Everyone wants to take part in big matches so it is important to be playing well at the moment."
