CHARLIE Adam's 35th minute penalty was enough to get Walter Smith's side off to a winning start on their pre season tour of Germany.

The midfielder coolly slotted home after Jean Claude Darcheville was felled in the box after a great ball from summer signing Kenny Miller.

But Adam was then forced off late in the game with an ankle problem as Gers lost two more midfielders to injury.

American winger DaMarcus Beasley also departed in the late stages after complaining of a tight hamstring.

However Miller's performance on the first start of his second spell with Rangers will have been a welcome boost to manager Walter Smith who paired the new boy up front with Darcheville.

Miller was a lively presence throughout a disjointed first half that displayed all the signs of a Rangers team taking the first steps on the road to a new season.

His persistence earned the first corner of the match in the 10th minute and Charlie Adam's delivery found Christian Dailly's head.

The big defender knocked it down to his centre back partner Davie Weir but he couldn't get the ball out from his feet to register a shot on target.

Preussen were enjoying the majority of possession with Massih Wassey, Julian Loose and Marius Sowislo in particular causing the Gers back line some problems.

Loose's break down the right after 16 minutes almost produced an opener when he picked out midfielder David Lauretta, but Neil Alexander was equal to his effort.

Alexander was beaten a few minutes later and was grateful to Dailly for clearing off the line from Sowislo's effort.

With Preussen dominating the midfield, Kevin Thomson picked up the first booking of the match when he was penalised for a late challenge in the middle of the park.

However Referee Cetin Sevinc kept his cards in his pocket after 35 minutes when Darcheville earned the penalty that put Rangers in front.

Miller had dropped deep to collect the ball and when Lee McCulloch broke beyond him for the first time in the match he had options ahead of him.

He opted to loft a ball over Darcheville's head and the French forward knocked it past keeper David Buchholz before being pulled down by the German stopper.

Adam immediately claimed the ball and calmly rolled it past Buchholz into the bottom right corner of the net.

Thomson came dangerously close to collecting a second yellow shortly before half time and it came as no surprise when Walter Smith opted to make him his first change of the match, during the interval.

Nacho Novo took Thomson's place and the introduction of the Spaniard saw Rangers spend more time on the front foot in the second period.

Miller saw the benefit of that as he was on the end of two good chances in the opening quarter of an hour of the second half.

Just five minutes after the break he found himself clear in the box on the left hand side but his firm strike rebounded off the post and cleared.

And ten minutes later he was again the beneficiary of some neat work between Novo and Darcheville, but this time Buchholz made it to the ball first and plucked it from the striker's toes.

Novo continued to look dangerous on the right and he had the ball in the net midway through the half only to be ruled offside.

His combination with Miller will be a bright spot for manager Smith, who will no doubt be concerned by a growing injury list among his squad.
