cLEISH admitted he was "overwhelmed" with the reception he received at full-time from the Rangers supporters as he bowed out following four and a half years in charge at Ibrox.
McLeish took to the field to bid farewell to the fans after Kris Boyd's double had earned his side a 2-0 win over Hearts.
And he revealed that he had no regrets about walking away from Rangers.
He said: "I was overwhelmed by the reception from the fans and also humbled and honoured.
"It's not my bag, the bowing and taking applause, but it felt appropriate today. I was very touched by it.
"It is a moment I will never forget but it's time for me to go. It's been draining at times and that's why I need to take a break and freshen up.
"It didn't destroy me despite what some people might have said and I stayed to the end of the season despite people telling me I should have walked away.
"That's not in my make up and I'm really glad that I stayed until now."
In his final address to the media following today's game, McLeish listed lifting the CIS Cup in 2002 as a pivotal moment in his managerial career at Ibrox and recalled fondly the treble he collected the following year as well as last year's final day SPL triumph.
He added: "The first trophy was vital for me to secure a form footing at Rangers. Then I don't think the fans will ever forget the treble year.
"And of course there was the end to last season when the helicopter changed direction. That day will live with Rangers fans forever."
And his advice for his successor, Paul Le Guen?
"Don't get injuries," he grinned.
