PEDRO Mendes became Walter Smith's sixth signing of the 2008 summer transfer window when he completed a £3m move from English Premier League club Portsmouth.
The Portuguese midfielder sealed a three year deal with the club to follow Kenny Miller, Andrius Velicka, Kyle Lafferty, Madjid Bougherra and Aaron Niguez to Ibrox.
A cultured midfielder, Mendes has a wide range of experience after enjoying Champions League success in his home country under Jose Mourinho at Porto.
That 2004 final would prove to be his last appearance for the club as he moved to England when Spurs paid the European champions £2m.
He spent only a season and a half at White Hart Lane but during his time there he was famously denied a wonder goal against Manchester United in January 2005.
Former Gers keeper Roy Carroll was in goal at Old Trafford that day and clawed Mendes' shot from the half way line out from behind the goal line.
TV replays showed the ball had clearly crossed the line, but the referee denied Mendes a match winning strike.
A year later, in the January transfer window of 2006, Mendes was part of a three player deal that saw Noe Pamarot and Sean Davis join him in a move to the south coast to sign up with Portsmouth.
He played a pivotal role in keeping his new side in the Premier League, including scoring a sensational double against Manchester City that all but rescued them from relegation in 2006.
The following season he had a less successful meeting with the blue half of Manchester when a challenge from Ben Thatcher left him unconscious on the touchline.
He described the incident, which saw him receive oxygen on the pitch side before being rushed to hospital, as his worst moment in football.
In the return match with City that season he again scored a trademark long range goal, before being on the receiving end of a match ending challenge from Joey Barton.
During his final season with Portsmouth, increasing competition in the centre of the pitch meant the midfielder managed only 14 league starts.
However he did enough to earn a starting berth in the FA Cup final as Pompey lifted the trophy for the first time since 1939.
He would again leave his old club on a high, with the final being his last competitive match in a Pompey shirt.
Mendes introduced himself to Rangers fans in style with a string of man-of-the-match performances in his early matches in light blue.
And he has continued his tendency for the spectacular with wonderful strikes against Celtic, Partick Thistle and Inverness earning him a place firmly in light blues' fans' hearts early in his Ibrox career.
His fourth strike did not come until the final day of 2008/09 season, but another fine hit from the edge of the area all but secured the title for Rangers and for Mendes in his debut season.
