RANGERS held off interest from Bayer Leverkusen and Real Betis to sign Marseille skipper Brahim Hemdani in June 2005.

The French Algerian, a cultured defensive midfielder who was out-of-contract, signed a four-year deal with the SPL title-holders.

He spent two years at Cannes in the late 90s and three seasons at Strasbourg before making the switch to the Velodrome in January 2001.

He was a key player for the French heavyweights and skippered OM to the 2004 UEFA Cup Final against Valencia.

A former French under-21 star, Rangers had been tracking Hemdani since watching him play against Newcastle two years ago.

After a prolonged pursuit, Alex McLeish finally made him his second signing of summer 2005, just days after bringing Ian Murray to Ibrox.

Hemdani had injury problems during his first season at Ibrox but put in a string of impressive performances at the tail end of the campaign in both the league and Champions League.

He continued this form throughout the 2006/07 campaign and was arguably Rangers' most consistent performers.

He was rewarded for his efforts when supporters named him Player of the Year.

The following season saw Hemdani manage only 12 starts in the SPL, but he remained a key figure in the club's incredible European run.

Hemdani turned out in all but one of Rangers' 19 European ties in the 2007/08 season - making it to his second UEFA Cup final in four years as a key part of Walter Smith's continental midfield.

The lack of European football in season 08/09 hampered Hemdani as he faced fresh competition for a midfield spot from summer signings Pedro Mendes, Steven Davis and Mo Edu.
