BORN in Madrid on August 23, 1981 Carlos Javier Cuellar Jimenez started his professional career at CD Calahorra but he was to move to Spanish Second Division side CD Numancia in 2001 at the age of 19.
I
t was here that he started to build his reputation as one of the most promising young defenders in the country.
His tough tackling, no nonsense approach won him many admirers and, after making 64 appearances and scoring four goals for Numancia, he earned a move from Soria to Pamplona to play for the Primera Division side Osasuna.
Powerful in the air, strong in the tackle and dangerous at set-pieces Cuellar made an immediate impression and soon became a fans' favourite at the Reyno de Navarra Stadium due to his passionate and committed displays.
Osasuna finished mid-table in Spain's top league in 2003/04 and 2004/05 campaigns but the following season was to be one of the best in the club's history.
Cuellar was a key player as Los Rojillos finished fourth in one of the world's most competitive leagues and this gave the club a chance to qualify for the Champions League at the start of the 2006/07 season.
Defeat to Hamburg in the qualifying stages, however, meant that Osasuna dropped down into the UEFA Cup where they were drawn in Group D alongside Parma, Lens, Odense and Heerenveen.
They finished second in the group and then beat Bordeaux 1-0 after extra-time to set up a last 16 clash with Rangers.
Cuellar was hugely impressive in the 1-1 first-leg at Ibrox and it was here that Walter Smith got his first glimpse of the 25-year-old in action.
Following the Light Blues' exit to Osasuna in the tournament rumours that the Gers' gaffer was interested in the towering central defender started to circulate and when he eventually signed for the club today it came as little surprise.
Cuellar's undoubted strength, technical ability and experience from playing at the top level in Spain for several years are sure to make him a terrific addition to the Rangers squad.
