DAVID WEIR became the first signing of Walter Smith's second spell in charge of Rangers when he agreed a short-term deal in January 2007.

The Scotland defender had been in his eighth year with the Goodison club but was given permission by boss David Moyes to move back home to Scotland.

After three years playing college football at the University of Evansville in the United States, Weir began his professional career in 1992 when he signed for Falkirk.

He spent four years there before moving to Hearts with whom he won the Scottish Cup in 1998. He left Tynecastle a year later and has spent the subsequent period as an Everton player, racking up more than 200 appearances for the Toffeemen.

He made his international debut in 1997 and last year earned his 50^th cap for Scotland.

Davie's vast experience helped to steady the ship at Ibrox after a poor first-half to the 2006/07 season and he was inspirational as Rangers secured second place in the SPL. 

As a result Smith had no hesitation in giving the defender a year extension which will take him through to the summer of 2008.
